My favourite A train

Song for the sun (carnival rites)

Primitive Bird

Alessandra Eramo's new solo album Tracing South is a sonic enchantment through the use of extended vocal techniques, analog electronics and her hypnotic field recording of bagpipe (zampogna) during the Carnival rites in Southern Italy. She shapes mouth noises, breath, whispers, her invented languages, fragmented words, the sound of old tape recorders, handmade theremin and synth, and she creates a sound poetry composition that seems to evolve into a shamanic trance music. Polyphonic singing, repetition, dissonance and overtones are tearing the listener out of the comfort zone. Tracing South is centered on the last three years of her artistic research and concerts in Europe, the Mediterranean region and Chile. Reflecting on the Mediterranean Sea as a human and spiritual dimension, as a crossroad for cultural exchanges and passages of all sorts, but now also as a vast and silent migrant cemetery, Eramo's work oscillates between the caress of tender melodies and the brutal energy of noise eruptions.
She says "Like the sound of the sea, repetitive, always different and in constant moving, I'm interested to explore the concepts of Global South and Instability, by tracing a South as a non-geographical condition, an imaginary sonic cosmos, which is open, crude and undefined, giving space to conscious freedom of the listener."

REVIEWS

La quarta traccia, Really very gut! "Song for the sun (Carnival Rites)" sembra prendere materiale etnomusicologico, folklore, per deformarlo. When I look into your eyes.

On "Tracing South", Berlin-based sound artist Alessandra Eramo focuses very heavily on experiments with her own voice, in a theatrical and not over-processed manner that harks back several decades. Eramo repeats words and phrases, overlapping, looping, and counterpointing both linguistic and a-lingual vocal noises, often as the sole instrument. Around this work is a fairly light smattering of more modern-sounding electronic elements to add occasional extra textures-found sounds, and on rare occasions theremin and harmonica (all played by Eramo herself). It all works best when it is either at its most playful, tinkering with sonic ideas, or most simple. Really Very Gut!, with its over-effusive repetition of the "really very", is bordering on childish, but very likeable, while the more electronics-heavy My Favourite A Train is probably both the most accomplished and most unusual piece here, while final piece When I Look Into Your Eyes is a purist singer's showcase. When it "goes serious" then it is perhaps more of a mixed bag. The juxtaposition of curt grunts with longer vocal drones on Vacio is very nicely executed, while the pure vocal performance at the root of Primitive Bird is both beautiful and impressive. However at times, such as on I Cannot Neglect The Sea, there's a certain amount of self-indulgence to the introspection, which doesn't seem to sit as well as it might. Song For The Sun (Carnival Rites) takes a totally different tack, blending together recordings of carnival music and celebration that devolve weirdly into radio white noise for a middle-of-the-album track that sounds like it's been lifted from a totally different work, but which is intriguing in its own right. An applaudable collection of pieces from a very strong experimental vocalist.

Dokonalou slovní ekvilibristiku přináší really very gut! Vyrážené i táhlé hlásky a slabiky jsou pak doménou skladby vacio. Song for the sun (carnival rites) vychází z terénní nahrávky z karnevalu v Chile a působí jako dĕtská píseň. Do ptačího svĕta se všemi jeho skřeky, šelesty, štĕkoty a cvrliky nás zavede primitive bird. Konglomerát elektronického balastu, hrdelního zpĕvu, skřípotu, žbrblání i šamanského zaříkávání pak přináší my favourite A train. A zcela na závĕr zazní překvapivĕ regulérní píseň-vyznání when I look into your eyes. Alessandra tu zkrátka překvapuje každým momentem a k nečekaným zvratům i vtipným pointám dochází mnohdy v průbĕhu daného kusu. Oproti předchozím dílům obrovský skok vpřed. Dotažené, svébytné, bez použití obvyklých rozšířených hlasových technik a přesto technicky zcela brilantní.

E dopo tanto peregrinare chiude When I look into your eyes, canto nostalgico e ninna nanna che nasce dall'utopia di un mare pacificato.

Přidala dech, ŝepot, roztříŝtená slova, dekonstruované verŝe, polyfonní zpev, repetice, disonanční či alikvótní erupce, vyrážené slabiky, hlasová pohlazení i hlasový brutalismus, holanovské modlitby kamene, a to v jedenácti skladbách. Každá je nabitá horkými nápady, jež přicházejí nečekane a nenechají posluchače vychladnout. Vrcholné okamžiky čekají ve skladbách Really very Gut! (nocturne), Southern Landscape (v hlavní roli harmonika), Song For the Sun (carnival rites), My Favourite A train, Primitive Bird a záverečné When I Look Into Your Eyes, témeř gospelove zpívané.

Phontas Troussas, ΔΙΣΚΟΡΥΧΕΙΟΝ, May 2019

Αναφέρομαι, για παράδειγμα, στο “Song for the sun (Carnival rites)” τής δεύτερης πλευράς, που κατορθώνει να συνδυάσει «ζωντανά» οργανικά patterns, με τραγούδι, πείραμα και χρήση επιτόπιων εγγραφών.
Frank P. Eckert, Groove Magazine, May 2019

Rigo Dittmann, Bad Alchemy, April 2019

This is the south, they kiss the sand. Welche Sprache, which language könnte das verschweigen? A piece A peace país by e i eiei a o... folgt als weitere Poesia sonora, durchmessen mit vokalisiertem iiiii. Eramo vokalisiert Aaa A A A Eeee Oooo E E E Aaaa... und nennt es Vacío - Leere, Öde, Vakuum. When I look into your eyes singt. Wie bei "Here's looking at you, Kid!" liegt dazwischen jedoch ein Meer, über das nicht jede Flucht gelingt.
